The Story of my Miracle!

Hi Guys, It's 1 AM at night and I've just returned home after having coffee with this couple friends of mine, and am very inspired to write and share a story of mine with you. After we were done catching up on our lives, the conversation took an interesting turn where we were discussing the existence of good and evil in this world. The wife has, a few years back, taken some interesting courses with me on various forms of Spirituality, which always leads us to discuss how our lives have changed (or not) because of it and so it wasn't unusual for us to be chatting on such an obscure subject. The topic then turned to the subject of this post of mine, which is what has inspired me to get home and get on the computer- Miracles. We discussed some of the Miracles I've seen in my life and some they've witnessed in theirs, and I'm absolutely blown away by some of the amazing things that touch our lives that some of our closest friends don't know about us. I was shocked that I've known them for years and they still didn't know about my wonderful story, just like I didn't know about some of theirs, and realized that for all the articles I've had published, or all my personal posts I've blogged, I've never ever written about this beautiful Miracle I've seen take place in my own life.
This post is not supposed to be advocating any particular religion, or any religion at all really. Most people in this world believe in something greater than us out there, whether they'd like to call it God, World Spirit, Absolute Being, Creator or Universal Energy. People also believe that through history there are men and women who have been more in touch with this Godlike energy, and are either more enlightened or have the ability to break the laws of physics at will. Each religion has such gurus or prophets being referred to in their holy scriptures, but for the sake of neutrality I will use the term they are referred to in the realm of Spirituality- Ascended Masters. My story is to do with one such Ascended Master who lived in a place called Shirdi in India in his lifetime- Sai Baba of Shirdi, also known as Shirdi Sai Baba. He performed many miracles in his lifetime that have been documented by his followers and devotees, who were of both Hindu and Muslim faith as Sai Baba never disclosed his own religious background and followed practices of both religions. In his lifetime, Baba lived as a fakir or beggar and never owned any possessions of his own till he died in Shirdi in 1918, after which a place of worship was constructed around the area he used to live. People from all around India, and often from around the world visit this Temple, sometimes to ask for things, sometimes give thanks or sometimes merely pay respects to what was once the home of this Fakir.
Many years back, probably when I was just a teenager, my Father too had decided he wanted to take his family to Shirdi, and insisted one Weekend we accompany him there. We lived in Mumbai at that time and had never been to Shirdi before, and being kids we complained about having to give up our weekend to head there. The long drive was tedious and tiring and once we got to Shirdi we complained about there being "nothing to see" there. India has some marvelous sites for pilgrimages and the one we used to frequent was massive with lots of gold around its structure, with the statue of the Deity often glistening in Crores of Rupees worth of diamonds. In Shirdi we were welcomed by a hut that posed as a place of worship, a tree that Baba sat under, a wheel he used to grind wheat on, and little else. My parents and Aunt and Uncle who had accompanied us, tried narrating some stories about the miracles Baba had performed, but were not really well versed with any of the stories, as none of them were devotees of his either. The time came for us to head back to Mumbai, and as was customary in Shirdi, we were given some flowers to adorn our cars, which we did before we began our journey back home.
My parents along with my Uncle were being driven in a car that rode in front, and my sisters and I rode in with my Aunt in the car that followed. It was a long tiring journey and we chatted in the car as we rode across the empty stretch of land. There were no cars around us and no trees on either side, and it was still bright out. It was just both our cars that drove along the road with empty fields on either side. When my Mother narrates the story, at this point she likes to pause and let people know we were all awake for what happened next, as those who know me know I fall asleep instantly in any moving vehicle, and she probably considers me being awake a mini miracle in itself! Anyhow, we were riding along when my parents car in front suddenly pulled over in the middle of the road. This is a time before mobile phones existed in India, and we leaned over to see if we could figure out what the problem was. We later found out that the flowers that had been tied to the front of my parents car had hit their windscreen and the driver had stopped to take them off. At that moment, we only knew that their car had stopped and it was my Aunt who first noticed the man who seemed to appear from nowhere, standing in the middle of the road. "Look!" she gasped, "It's Baba!"
The man was fair as milk and wore the same saffron robes that we saw Sai Baba wear in the pictures we had seen of him. There was no doubt in anyone's mind present there that we were indeed looking at the Master who was very much deceased, and not for a second did we think, "oh look.. here's a beggar that looks just like him!" I wonder now what we were thinking and why we didn't jump out of the car and have a chat with him or do SOMETHING, but I just recall us all being transfixed, like we were in a daze, and we sat in our car just staring over at him. We later found out that my parents pretty much had the same sort of reaction on noticing and recognizing him, and only my Father got out of the car to give him some money. Our eyes stay fixed upon him as my Father took blessings from Him, just as our eyes stayed fixed on Him when my Father got back in and the cars started moving. It is always upon narrating or thinking about this next part is what really gives me goosebumps- in front of our eyes, just as the cars started to move, Sai Baba disappeared into thin air.

Whenever things are going wrong in my life or I'm questioning the "Why" and the reason to certain things, I like to think of this story and remind myself that I'm one of the few fortunate people in this world who KNOW that there is something greater than us out there! I was extremely fortunate to be on the receiving end of what I can only describe as a Miracle, and I like to also think I was extremely fortunate to have my entire family with me who can verify that I wasn't hallucinating or seeing things. I hope reading my story helps bring a slight bit of comfort to you, or maybe just a little bit of amazement.. or even some Peace? If you do have your own personal miracle to narrate to me, or have any questions or comments about mine, I'd love for you to write in to me in the comments below. Narrating this story brings me such immense joy, as it's always a reminder to me about Love and God and Goodness in this world and other such fun things, so thanks so much for reading and being a part of that!

Mark Zuckerberg on SNL!

Here's a snippet of the latest Saturday Night Live, which had a guest appearance of Mark Zuckerberg, who probably needs no introduction post the movie, Social Network. The Facebook founder appeared alongside Jesse Eisenberg, the actor who played Zuckerberg's role in the movie. It's a good think Eisenberg did a better job at acting than the real Zuck, who seems to have terrible comic timing. It's quite sad though, that I rarely even think SNL is funny at all these days.

Taco Bell- "Thank you for Suing us"

If you've read my personal statement on here, then you'll know that I interned at an advertising agency when I was younger, and my dream job would have probably been to be a Creative Director of a huge Madison Avenue ad agency in New York (if not the Editor of a fabulous magazine!). Either way, I'm always intrigued and impressed by a great ad, and the headline for this one jumped out at me- "Thank You for Suing us" from Taco Bell. It seems that the giant food conglomerate is being sued for not using real beef in their tacos, and they're fighting back the claim with this very smart ad. It's not only an effective way for them to educate their customers, but if the customers are anything like me, they'll read till the end of the body copy and will then desperately crave one, or in my case, want to try one! Not to mention all the free publicity they are getting. Of course, now all they need to do is tackle that damned court case!

My new Favourite Song

Every once in a while a song comes out that you just can't stop listening to... The remix version of this song is having JUST that effect on me! This isn't the remix, but I couldn't find the one they play on the radio on YouTube and I figured people might just like this one too. I LOVE!

Sneak Peak into the closet of Kimora Lee Simmons

Recently online company Bluefly got a little sneak peak into the closet of Kimora Lee Simmons and posted a video as part of their Closet Confessions series. You have got to take a look at this to see how insane her wardrobe is!

Would you like to have a closet like this or do you think it's all a bit much??

Vandana Bhatia on Winter in Cape Town!

She was the first person I profiled for my Profile Corner, so it's not surprising that she is the first guest blogger I have on here too. The gorgeous Vandana Bhatia very kindly took out time to write a few words on her trip to Cape Town to give you guys tips on where to go, what to eat and what to see in the scenic city. Vandana was there with her family over New Years and from the sounds of it, has probably got the city pretty high up on her "favourite places to visit" list so read on for some insider tips from her vabulous vacation!

Lively beaches, beautiful scenery, gorgeous weather, fabulous beach houses, outstanding service, exquisite food and of course... the wines. Aah the wines. If you've never visited I suggest you start accumulating those miles and push Cape Town to the top of your destination list. You won't be disappointed. With its immense natural beauty, a myriad of things to do and places to see, you'll be spoilt for choice. 7 days are easily fulfilled here (or 12 in our case) and you'll still be compelled to return.

Things to do: rent a villa (Kia Ora or Villa Yvette, Clifton Road), climb to the top of Cape Point to witness the merging of the Indian & Atlantic Oceans (and take pictures of the baboons on the way), go for a drive at night up to Signal Hill, try the seafood linguine with truffle and the half metre long pizza for lunch at
The Grand at the Beach (and discover the cute gift shop), take a ferry to Robben Island to relive Mandela's imprisonment and the apartheid era, people watch at the Virgin Active Gym (what I really mean is ogle at the hotties), join the Capetonians for a cappuccino at Giovanni's (and take home some fresh cheese with their homemade fig jam), explore the boutiques in the trendy Cape Quarter (and pick up great accessories from local designers), buy meat from the local butcher on Kloof and invite some friends over for a braai, buy an exotic skin clutch bag, discover a cute little restaurant in Constantia (our fave -La Colombe), Stellenbosch or Franschhoek (our fave - Reubens), rent a bicycle and ride around Camp's Bay, opt for a healthy, organic brunch at Manna's, obsess over the super quirky crockery designer Carrol Boyes, go wine tasting to one of 600+ vineyards (our favs -Ernie Els Wine Estate and Hamilton Russell Vineyard Estate), take the funicular with spinning floor to Table Mountain (and take cheesy souvenir pics), have dinner at The Duchess, go paraglidiing (or not and say you did), have high tea with scones at the Table Bay Hotel or Ellerman House, watch the most breathtaking sunsets while listening to your in-house pianist, waddle with the penguins at Boulder's Bay, have a boozy brunch at Paranga's (preferably on a Sunday as the locals do), stock up on Charlotte Rhys products (South Africa's answer to Jo Malone at a fraction of the price), and finally, realise you've started saying 'ja' instead of 'yes'.

Right, now time to fulfill those New Year's resolutions of a healthy diet. Ja.

Thanks so much Vandana for this very informative piece! You've got me (and I'm sure my readers too) very envious of your lovely holiday. Now if only you'd succumb and do my 7 day fashion diary, life would be so much easier now wouldn't it??
And guys Vandana is soon going to have a blog out of her own where she covers all the latest Fashion trends and the best of all the lovely brands she sources from the world over (including some insider tips and exclusive offers)  for her Odyssey Trunk Shows. Will alert you guys when she has that up and running.. Have gotten a sneak peak already, and it's looking great!

My New Years Resolutions for 2011

Sooo... you're probably looking at this post wondering, "while all my resolutions have been made and already broken, why is Kiran talking about New Years resolutions waaaay after the champagne hangover and empty promises of the 31st have dissolved into mindless oblivion?" Well friends, because this year instead of chanting my standard resolute mantra of, "I will loose weight" I decided to ponder a little about my resolutions and think about what it is I REALLY want to change about myself, my life and my world in 2011.
Every year exactly around this time I usually tend to find some major shifts taking place in my life and the lives of my loved ones around me, that tends to leave everyone feeling a little moody, a little anxious and in general, a little on edge. I really do believe there is some sort of cleansing that takes place right around the end of the year and it's beginning, some weird sort of shift in energies that in general makes me a bit uneasy. For some weird reason, it's something most of my friends go through as well, which only helps me support my theory... I don't know if you guys feel it too. Either way, December 2010 was no different with a lot of weird stuff in my life coming to the surface which made me sit back and think about the changes I wanted to make in the New Year. In addition to that I had been warned by an astrologer that I was going to go through a very interesting phase from the end of November into the first few months of the year which would be a phase of sort of cleansing of the old and the birth of the New. A lot of changes in my life pointed to the fact that, well, he might be right, and if in fact I'm going through such a period, I might as well succumb to it and facilitate it's process, rather than holding back and trying to fight against the change. My resolutions thus, are based on this idea, the first one being...
You can't change or control others, only yourself- Recently I was chatting with my friend Soniyaa and complaining to her about the behaviour of some people around me. "I just can't understand what is wrong with people these days," I whined. "Why does everybody these days just behave weird all the time?" Now if you've read any of my previous articles through the years, you would have heard me refer back to advice my friend Soniyaa has given me  (she's a therapist, so in a way I get my head sorted by her for free) and this time was no different. "Stop expecting people to behave a certain way Kiran," she said sweetly. "You need to accept people for what they are- the good, the bad and the ugly, and it's only when you aim to do that, will your relationships in every aspect of your life will be at peace." I hung up the phone and thought about what she said, and it was true that in many recent incidents (she herself had cited 3 for me in my life) I had expected people to behave a certain way and was completely disappointed when they didn't match up to my expectations. People will be how they will be, and while you don't always have to be happy with their actions, it's SO much worse to expect the the world out of them and then feel disappointed when they don't live up to that. The friend that talked about you behind your back? That guy who blows hot and cold and plays mind games with you? The acquaintance who snubbed you at a party? In all cases, i would feel completely justified in fuming and fretting in these situations and letting my ego rule my emotions. Now, I'm going to try to accept these people for what they are and then try to figure out their own motivations for certain actions. In some cases I might choose to not have the person around in my space if they were in it to begin with- I won't stop calling a spade (or an idiot) a spade (or idiot). Just this way, I'll do it without the extra baggage of anger, resentment and other useless emotions attached to it. Hopefully this will help me be more accepting of people's behaviours though, and won't see me dropping friends like flies!
Which brings me to my second Resolution- Forgive.
recently reconciled with someone who had really wronged me in my life and had serious epiphany through it. I hadn't spoken to this person in around five or six years, and even though I had in my own mind and in my own way forgiven them, the thought of me coming face to face with them was enough to make me very, very queasy. Interestingly enough, it was very recently that the person contacted me out of the blue and sincerely apologized for all they had done wrong. While they were trying to get the burden of forgiveness off their chest, I never realized how huge a weight would be lifted off mine. I realized to truly be able to move forward in life, as important as it is to ask for forgiveness, it's just as equally liberating (if not more so) to truly forgive. My 2010 was definitely a better year because that part of me that I never even knew was carrying the emotional charge towards the person, was completely put to rest.
Which brings me to my last and final Resolution... Surrender.
This one was a resolution that I sort of decided upon as I felt the Universe was guiding me to it. Again, a series of incidents in my life just made me a feel a little out of control recently. The fact that I was running from one astrologer to another in itself speaks volumes of how badly I wanted to be able to try to control the outcome of my life, or how badly I wanted to know what happens next. Interestingly enough it all started with 2 different astrologers giving me two different outcomes in a particular area of my life that had me stressing about which one I wanted to happen and how I could get there. Let me reiterate the ridiculousness of the situation- I was stressing about a non-existent issue that at the moment is completely out of my hands, and wondering about which one I wanted to happen and how I could get there. Remember that anxious feeling I told you about? Crazy thoughts like this will definitely do that to you! Yet, how many of us worry about future issues and possible problems before they have even arisen? I'm currently reading this book "Black Swan" which talks about, amongst other things, how ridiculous graphs and charts predicting the future of the stock market, or the GDP of a country or the future of anything are, as there will ALWAYS be unforeseen circumstances that WILL change the outcome. I looked back to my life itself and saw how every opportunity "missed", every guy I didn't marry, every decision I "wrongly" made have all given me so much more in life than the path I thought I wanted. Which brought me to a signification realization- Someone Up there loves me very much and whatever it is that He has planned for me is definitely a lot better than what I've planned for myself.
So why not wait for it to unfold and surrender to the process? :)
Anyhow, I thought I'd share my resolutions with you guys and hopefully have you thinking about your own. Do write in and let me know what yours are, as you know I absolutely LOVE to hear from you all. Hope your 2011 is already shaping up to be a great year.. I know mine is!

Quick look at the Google Nexus S phone

A few days back I had the pleasure of seeing P K Gulati again, when he told me about his latest toy- the Google Nexus S. "Show me!" was my immediate response and not only did he oblige, he let me play with the phone for a few days. Now while I usually take my review units (that are usually from Jumbo) and use them extensively for a few days, I only really used this phone for an hour or so as I was too scared of banging it up, or worse... getting so comfortable with it that I didn't want to give it back. Either way, this review is more of a short synopsis of my first impressions of the phone with the time that I got with it.

If you've read my review of the Samsung Galaxy S or have ever seen or played with the phone, you'll see that the Nexus S is extremely similar to the device. It's got the same plastic feel as the Galaxy S, which I seemed to love at that time, but don't really fancy too much now. The phone also has a 1GHz Hummingbird CPU, 512 MB of RAM, a gorgeous 4 inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED screen, 16 GB of storage and a 5 Megapixel rear and VGA front-facing camera. On switching on the device though, I could immediately tell that the device had the new software- the much talked about Android 2.3 AKA Gingerbread. It just seemed a little more "polished" and snappier that the Galaxy S, and could handle stuff much faster and smoother.

While the OS is the big story about the phone, people expecting a huge difference from other Android devices are probably likely to be disappointed The icons look a little better and there are a few minor but not really notable changes to the software that I noticed while playing with the phone, but that's about it. The keyboard is also different and seems a lot more intuitive than the iPhone keyboard, but I guess that just boils down to personal taste. Apart from that, there was nothing really new on the device, and everything seemed to work just fine which incidentally, may actually be why the Nexus S is my most favourite Android phone to date.

The beauty of the Nexus S in my opinion, is that it does things just as the way it's supposed to. I had my contacts and calender and email up and running in 2 minutes flat, without any other problems that I went through on my Galaxy S or HTC Desire. I'm personally tired of getting phones that start up in Arabic and take me half an hour to figure out how to get them back in English, during which time the foreign OS actually becomes a nightmare to use rather than allowing me to marvel at it's abilities. The Nexus S is beautiful on Start up and refreshingly quick and easy, which is more due to the fact that it has been bought from the US. Also since Android allows for a lot of customizations, HTC and Samsung have in the past butchered the Operating System beyond recognition, often adding heavy cosmetic changes onto the software, or localizing it to have tons of extra unwanted software taking up too much space on the device. The Nexus S is a pure Google device and shows off the Operating System the way it's supposed to be used- which, it turns out, is quite impressive. Again, I didn't get too much time to play with the phone, but if the reviews online are anything to go by, others seem as impressed as me and aren't hesitant in crowing the Nexus S, the best Android phone on the market today.

I'd like to thank Prashant Gulati for kindly parting with his new toy before he had a chance to fully play with it... Any gadget lover knows how excruciating that can be. If you've found this review informative, please be a part of his already large Twitter follower base and follow him here.

At Home in Emirates Hills

If you guys follow my blog regularly, you'll have noticed a slight lull in my posting over the past few weeks. However, my blog was not completely forgotten as I partied myself into the new year.. I had a few ideas I wanted to implement and waited till the New Year to get them going. One of these was to expand on my "Design Corner" theme and showcase some of the beautiful homes that I've seen in Dubai as well as on my travels abroad. A lot of people are probably a bit hesitant while opening their homes up to be photographed, and I knew I'd have to do a bit of arm twisting to get that to happen so I decided to pick an easy target for my first home review- I zoned in on my eldest sister.
My sister Bhavika Godhwani has studied Interior Design while at College in India, so when she decided to buy and do up her own house in Emirates Hills, I knew she would be involved a 100% in getting it just right to her tastes. Her home is a beautiful mix of contemporary and classic, and the palette of neutral hues in her main living room is highlighted by the gorgeous pieces of art her husband has collected from Indian Masters like M F Hussain, Souza, Sakti Burman, Jaideep Mehrotra, etc. My sister is constantly changing things around and recently just redid her Master Bedroom upstairs, which unfortunately she didn't let me photograph. She deemed her personal gym, my nephew's playroom, the TV room and her kids and her bedrooms upstairs, as well as a Home theater and game room downstairs, all as off limits to me, so here are some pictures of the rest of her home-
Her living room is covered with beautiful Persian rugs that adds a classic flavour to her mostly contemporary furniture. Parts of her walls are covered in a Mother-of-Pearl type treatment, with her ceilings painted a brushed gold to add a hint of grandeur.
Her baby Grand Piano is my favourite piece to run to whenever I visit, as I've recently been taking piano classes and have been making do with a Casio Keyboard at home!
The Dining Area, where she does a lot of her entertaining, is where she hangs one of my most favourite pieces of art in her home- a large painting of Hussain's horses. I also LOVE her sculpted candles that you can possibly see on the right, as well the large Buccellati center piece that sits on her dining table.

The informal lounge downstairs has a darker colour scheme which is complimented with an interesting Buddha painting by Baiju Parthan as well as a Ralph Lauren bar.
My sister has collected artifacts from all over the world and she still loves shopping for her home and adding to her collection. Some of her favourite pieces are from Daum, Lalique, Lotus Arts de Vivre (pictured below) and Buccellati (also pictured below).
Hope you guys enjoyed taking a peek into this lovely home. I promise you guys a lot of interesting pictures and posts just like this going forward!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Dear Readers,

Happy New Year!! I do realize I'm a few days late in wishing you this and I hope the start of the year has already proved to be a happy and successful one for you all. 2010 was quite an interesting year, and a very welcome follow up to 2009, which wasn't a really great year for me at all. The end of 2010 saw me go through quite a few changes in my life, one of the most important ones being the start of the blog you are currently reading. You guys have no clue how much joy it gives me when I have people telling me they love to read my blog, and in fact I had 3 people on New Years Eve go, "Are you Kiran from Kiran's Corner?" Yes!! That's me!
Speaking of New Years Eve, if my 31st evening is any indication of what the rest of the year will be like, it will be in one word- ADVENTUROUS! I had my ticket to head out to Cavalli Club at the Fairmont, and unlike most years where my plans usually form fairly last minute, I was quite pleased to have planned my evening almost a week in advance. The first screw up came in the afternoon of the 31st when the friend I was supposed to go with called me to let me know her husband had fallen sick and that they wouldn't be making it out. Fairly quickly I made alternative plans to head to the Capital Club with another group of friends and figured it wouldn't be a problem given that I'm a member there and could just walk in without needing a pass. We went to a friend's house early on in the evening to start off the celebrations and figured we could get a taxi to get us across to DIFC, which is where the Capital Club is located. Big mistake! The phone line to get a taxi was completely jammed and we were stranded in Jumeirah. My friend's father was kind enough to come fetch us and transport us to our venue... We hadn't considered the nutty Dubai traffic and the time it would take us to travel through a route that would otherwise take us 5 minutes. We were in danger of being stuck on the road at midnight! We jumped out of the car and decided to take the Metro down two stops which would take us to DIFC. We were so pleased with ourselves and ran up the escalator, excited to be taking our first ever Metro ride, till the doors of the Metro opened. We were greeted by a sea of men (who hadn't heard of, much less used deodorant)  packed like sardines into the Metro, and we had to hold our breath, hold our ground and just squish ourselves in. We were so delirious that we got off at the wrong stop and then luckily found a taxi who agreed to take us the rest of the distance. It wasn't fun, but we all couldn't stop laughing at our luck and the obstacles that were being thrown at us.
Well, as they say, all's well that ends well, and the party was actually a lot of fun. Here is a picture of my girl friends Mariya Kassam (on the right) and Michelle Amarnani (left) and I from the night-

How we got home is another completely absurd story that I won't even bother narrating. Yes, it's actually worse than the story of us getting there. Anyhow, hope you guys had as fun a night as I did, and for my readers who came up to me at Capital Club and said they love to read my blog, you really made my entire night!
Have a fabulous 2011!!!
