Microsoft Surface- a sneak peak..

As the release of Microsoft's Surface inches closer, there is a certain buzz taking place in tech blogs about this little device. For those who don't know what it is, it is Microsoft's entry into the tablet space, a space that is obviously mostly taken over my Apple, with Samsung and Amazon gunning for the iPad's market share. Apple however has plans to invade their territory instead with a highly rumoured iPad Mini to be released before the end of the year that will compete with the lower priced Android devices currently on offer. I read a story earlier today that Microsoft will be giving all its full time employees with a Surface which I think would be great not only for employee morale, but will improve visibility of the product and promote the product through word of mouth. Microsoft after all, isn't exactly a small company! The nifty little device is going to be launched on 26th with a previously rumoured price of 199USD with Steve Ballmer recently going on record with the Seattle Times suggesting it will cost somewhere between 300 to 700 or 800 USD.
If you haven't already seen pictures of one, the device has a 10.6 inch screen, a kickstand and will run Windows 8. The USP of the device of course remains its tactile multi-touch keyboard, which seemingly has left a lot of tech critics very impressed. We will see details in a month when the device is actually available, but in the meantime here is a video to whet your appetite.

I'm super excited to get my hands on one of these! Probably even more so than the iPad Mini! If this functions well, it will be quite revolutionary indeed!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!!! It's currently 3 AM in the Big Apple (I am jet lagged having just arrived yesterday) and I decided it was time to write my New Years post. I've been meaning to share these videos for a while, but I figured this post would be the perfect time to do it. If you haven't seen them and have never heard of Ben Breedlove, can I please urge you to be patient and watch these! They will change your life!!





Ben passed away on Christmas day 2011 and this video was found a few days after his demise. I'd actually heard of him before and was amazed when I realized that this young boy was actually the same one who had an advice channel on YouTube with 2 of his other friends, giving advice to other teenagers about random life stuff and relationships. What a way to spend your life knowing full well that your own could be cut short any minute! A lot of attention has been poured on Ben and these videos with Kim Kardashian tweeting about him and Kid Cudi talking about Ben's vision and I dare say most people will be moved to tears after watching it. I know I was.

I hope I'm not sounding too morose to you guys as that is not my intention at all! I'm hopeful for a fabulous year ahead and have all my resolutions planned out in my head (and mostly broken already) and had a supercrazyfun New Years Eve spent with great friends in Dubai before I jumped on a plane and came to my favourite city in the world. If that isn't a fabulous start to the new year, I don't know what is!

When I watched these videos, as I said earlier I knew I wanted them to be part of my New Year's post. Instead of putting up my resolutions as I did last year, I just wanted to leave you guys with a thought- to celebrate your life. 2011 wasn't a particularly great year for me and while I'm hoping for a better 2012, I have no regrets about the year gone and am reminded of a verse from my favourite poem, A Psalm of Life-

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
        Is our destined end or way ;
    But to act, that each to-morrow
        Find us farther than to-day.

Our life is made up of losses and successes and both are just as important as each other. I believe that when we finally reflect back on our lives, our not-so-good years will be as important as our fabulous ones as those will be the ones to have shaped our character. So while I know the past year hasn't been a great one for a lot of people, let's hope for a better 2012 while ourselves participating in the script of our lives and being the best that we can be. As the poem says-

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant !
        Let the dead Past bury its dead !
    Act,— act in the living Present !
        Heart within, and God o'erhead !

H&M-Versace collaboration announced!

Over the past few weeks there has been a buzz in the air about who would be the next designer of the moment to be collaboration with H&M. If you remember the Lanvin-H&M collaboration that happened a few months back, you'll remember the kind of manic fanfare that revolves around these tie-ups! Therefor there was much speculation about WHO the designer would be and finally it was announced that it is Donatella Versace who will be lending her creative ideas to the retail giant!
This is HUGE! Especially since the designer had gone on record in 2008 saying she didn't believe in diffusion lines and that, "a Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand."

My review of the Blackberry Playbook in Dubai

My review of the iPhone 4 and the iPad were probably 2 of my most popular posts on my blog last year, and this year when I got my iPad2, I figured it was so similar to the original iPad that I didn't even bother posting on it. I was eager to get my hands on the Blackberry Playbook but knew of quite a few people in Dubai who'd already managed to get their hands on one from other countries so didn't quite think people would be that curious to see what I had to say about the product... that is, till I got my piece to review. I hooked it up with my Blackberry phone (more on that later) and in a few minutes, I was good to go! I got on my BBM (Blackberry Messenger) on the Playbook and changed my status to "On the Playbook" and within MINUTES got bombarded my messages asking what I thought of the device, whether I liked it and most importantly, whether it deserved to be bought or not. "Wait for the review"I said in response to the queries and for the past week, have been playing with the Playbook, gearing up this review.

I'm going to go first with the assumption that you've heard very little about the Playbook, or not at all, and will get into this review that way rather than trying to dispel the rumours that surround the device. The Playbook is a small and cute device which is a lot smaller than the Apple iPad. I turned on my device (which is a prototype and on loan to me) and saw the basic apps I would expect like Browser, Pictures, Music, Camera, YouTube, etc, and a few others that I didn't expect like Video Chat, Word To Go (as well as Sheet and Slideshow To Go), Slacker Radio, Twitter and a few others. Ok, you're thinking, this is a Blackberry Device, let's talk about Email and BBM. Here is where I assume you've heard nothing of the device- Unless you're using Email on your Browser (like Gmail for example) the Blackberry Playbook does NOT allow for Push Email coming directly onto your device, neither does it support BBM... UNLESS you own a Blackberry Phone that the device is hooked up to via an App called "Blackberry Bridge." There are a few reasons why RIM have chosen to set up their Tablet this way and I'm guessing Security is probably on the top of that list! A lot of companies will choose to let their executives have the PlayBook and not have to worry about security on yet another device, as email hooks up flawlessly on the Tablet given that it is in the connectivity range of your phone. Leave your phone in the other room? Your Tablet can't hook up to it and you can say Bye to your email connectivity too. The good news? Lose your Playbook and nobody else can connect to your email without your phone or your contact list on BBM. This has lead to nasty rumours about the Playbook being useless to those without a BB phone. There is a very interesting article that I'd read when I was researching the device that does a fabulous job of dispelling this myth that can be found here which I urge you to read. It does a fab job of explaining exactly WHY lack of email connectivity is really not such a big deal! The Playbook does come with WiFi and it's performance on that is great. Another reason that makes the Blackberry such a popular device with Executives is the Global Roaming packages that are available with all the BB Service providers world over. I haven't tried this (I'm leaving town tomorrow but unfortunately the Playbook was only on loan to me for a week) but I do believe that a huge advantage of using the Playbook if you already own a BB phone is the ability to hook it up and be able to surf on it while traveling. Yes the iPad has 3G, but I really don't know anyone crazy enough to try to use the 3G and pay crazy roaming rates while out of the country.. do you? I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure the Playbook allows for that connectivity at no extra charge.

So you're thinking of getting the Playbook and want to know the pros and cons of the actual device. The keyboard is very quick and responsive and I actually probably like it better than the iPad keyboard. Maybe it's because the device is smaller and thus easier to type on.. I'm not too sure.
Also the advantages it has over the iPad.. it has Flash! It handles Flash heavy websites with ease and also does Multitasking very well. I think the poor device has received a lot of flak for what it CAN'T do that very little focus is put on what it CAN. Ok instead of trying to explain a lot of the stuff to you, I figured I'd just do a very short video review and show you guys the basics of running the device-


Hope you liked it and it helped give you an idea of what the Playbook is like! I'm holing the device and filming on my iPhone which is kinda hard, and it's 11 at night and I'm in my room which is dark so please excuse the light overhead! I'm leaving town early tomorrow and need to send the Playbook back so am trying my best to show you as much of the device before I go. I actually do love it and wish I was able to travel with it to see how it handles, but hopefully after it launches I can get my own and take it for a full spin.

Museum of Me

An Intel site really blew me away today! It is a promotion for their i5 processors, but I really don't know how the two relate at all. It accesses your Facebook information and in a few minutes creates what it calls, "The Museum of Me" which integrates all your info on Facebook including pictures, words you use most often as well as pictures of your friends and sets it up into a Museum-y type format.
I'm doing a crap job at explaining it, but trust me, it's really cool. To check out what your museum would look like, click here or watch the video below of what the Kiran Chhabria museum looks like! Since I couldn't save the video, I've taken it with my video camera facing my laptop so if you see any shadows or blurriness, that's why. I think it's just so SO well done!

No more Oprah?!?!?!

Only moments back I have finished watching the final episode of the Oprah show and just HAD to get on my blog and write a few words about it. A few days ago I met a friend for coffee and she handed me over a flash drive with the last 3 episodes (2 being the surprise event her staff planned for her and the final being her simply talking to her audience) and she encouraged me to watch it soon so we could discuss it. Her final episode has moved me so much, I felt I couldn't wait for the discussion with my friend and felt I had to talk about it now. As Oprah says at the start of her final episode, each of us are "guided" to do something in our lives- it doesn't have to be big, and it doesn't have to make us rich or famous. It just makes us feel like THIS is what we're meant to do. For me, that feeling has always come through either creativity or communication.. which is probably what lead me to write a blog as I feel in my own teeny tiny little way, it allows me to do both. I don't know where my writing or other creative outlet will take me in the future, but I know that I feel totally "plugged in" while doing it, and hence I know it's what's good for me as it's what I'm guided to. Either way, I just figured this was the natural outlet for me to give my thoughts on Oprah's show.
If you haven't seen the final episode, I HIGHLY recommend you watch it by finding it online somewhere, or by borrowing it from your friends or however you possibly can. The clip I show above is her last clip and final goodbye, and like millions of people round the world I too thought, "What?! No more Oprah?!"Yes, she isn't dead (everyone on Twitter too seems to be reminding themselves of that fact) but there's something about her way of communication and her spirit that shines through the TV set (or computer/device) and touches you directly. She talks also in this episode about God and coincidences, and echoes a thought I believe to be true- there is no such thing as a coincidence. Given that, it is perhaps not strange then that just this morning, I was having a conversation with my new Personal Trainer, Amir (whom I blogged about a few days back) and we were talking about loving and accepting yourself and your body. He keeps repeating to me about my weight and size, "it is what it is" and just this morning was telling me the importance of being happy with what you are NOW instead of having conditional happiness (I had just said, "I'll be happy if I loose x kilos"). I had argued that while one can wake up in the morning and affirm that they love themselves and what they see in the mirror, there will be people and situations through the day that will negate that and reaffirm to you that the way you are and the way you look IS important in life. It was then my own personal "Aha moment" when I watched the show just now and saw Oprah air clips of hers through the years and watched her weight go drastically up and down, as one thing remained constant over the 25 years her show has been aired- her magic on her audience. She changed lives and touched hearts and changed her own body several times, and if she can come on TV and drop the emotional shackles that bound her to her weight and be comfortable being watched by hundreds of thousands of people every day all over the world, what the hell am I complaining about?!
Oprah has over the years guided thousands of people to lead a better life and is one of the most inspirational people alive today. Madonna says in her 2 part surprise finale, that when people ask her who her role models are, she gives them a long and varied list  for the dead role models category, and in the "alive" list, has but one name- Oprah. As sappy and cliche as this sounds, I truly do echo her sentiments as well. To be able to alter lives and educate thousands of people, get millions to start reading again and become ridiculously famous while doing it is all well and good- to get people to start thinking, to be kind to one another and to learn to not only service but "pay it forward"... all while going through a public metamorphosis herself and struggling to come to terms with her own body, ego and abuse issues while doing it? She's definitely my hero.
Recently I had the honour and privilege or meeting Kevin Spacey while he was visiting Dubai and heard him give a private talk about work he is involved in in promoting the arts and theater. He said that he himself had learned from his mentor that when one rises and reaches levels of success, it's extremely important to "send the elevator back down" which is a thought that I'll never forget. While all of us should question ourselves of the type of life we'd like to live, a few actually do it, and a fewer still actually do something ABOUT it. Watching this episode really got me thinking (as you can tell) and once again I really recommend you listen to it. A few months back I'd posted a YouTube video of The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch along with other powerful speeches.. I think her final episode would definitely belong there, as it's not just advice she's giving people, but a testament to how she's lead 25 years of her life. It's really sad to think, what on earth will the world be like without Oprah?!

Jumbo Founder's Day Celebrations!

So every year on or around the 1st of March Jumbo celebrates Founder's Day in the Company, or what we call "Manusmriti". The 1st of March was actually my Late Father's birthday and I think it's such a special way for us to remember him and celebrate his life. We've been celebrating Founder's Day every year since his passing, and it's every year it's evolved into something bigger and better that not only Jumbo-ites, but their families too look forward to. The first year or two it was a very somber affair till my Mother decided that we should remember my Father by celebrating his successes and make it a fun-filled day with everyone getting involved. We tried having external organizers coordinating the event for us to disastrous effects till someone had the idea of handing over the organization to the fresh batch of Management Trainees that come in every year. The MT's stepped in and instead of having professional performers up on stage, opened up the floor to all the Jumbo talent we had in-house. Every year I'm always blown away by the singers and dancers we have within the company, and the video below will show you what I'm talking about! Founder's Day however is not just about the performances- we have cricket competitions, pool tournaments, quiz contests and a whole bunch of other things taking place weeks in advance, and have the awards given out on the day. Outdoors we have a place for the mini-Jumboites with a play area for kids with clowns and fancy dress competitions, etc. My favourite bit I must admit, is the show itself, and almost always is the performance by the Management Trainees themselves. Every year the MT's try and top the event done by the previous year, and although last year's was a really tough act to follow, I think the batch this year nailed it with a hilarious skit and "dance" routine if you can call it that. I took my video camera along to film my favourite bits of the show which I've sort of managed to compile together (please excuse my terrible editing skills!) but I just HAD to post the entire MT performance on here too. The skit unfortunately couldn't make it up here despite it having me in squeals of laughter... Those in attendance will know why!!

Is the Japan earthquake the begining of 2012?

By now you would have all heard about the 8.9 (on the richter scale) earthquake in Japan and followed the news, horrified to see the massive destruction that followed the quake and tsunami it caused. In fact, since the beginning of 2011, you might have noticed that a whole host of natural disasters have occured in various parts of the world, usually to disastrous effects. I recently read online a chronicle of natural disasters within the first 12 days of this year, which I thought was quite scary:

So much destruction has a lot of people questioning, is 2012 really the end of the world? Is all this massive destruction a sign of things to come? Is the myth of 2012 something real and not just an entertaining movie?
In my own life my introduction to spirituality came around 5 years back with my introduction to a man by the name of Dr. Yuvraj Kapadia. Yuvraj is the Founder and Head of an organization in India called the California Hypnosis Institute of India (CHII) and often comes to the UAE to give talks on various subjects and teach Clinical Hypnotherapy to eager students under the banner of Illuminations World. Over the years, Yuvraj has gone from being a teacher (I studied hypnotherapy with him and am a certified Clinical hypnotherapist) to being a friend and I often call on him to chat about life, issues or questions I may have. Since the first time I'd heard about the idea of 2012 was also from him, he was the person I wanted to call to talk about the idea of this phenomenon being a reality. Luckily for me, I found out he was coming to Dubai and I then requested if I could have him dictate his responses for a blog post to which he readily agreed. The following is his take on what it all means-

Hi Yuvraj.. You've been talking about 2012 waaaay before the movie came out. How is your take different from the movie's?
For centuries as man has evolved from the animal, we have always suffered from a hangover of animal traits in our being, which means we are still competing, feeling threatened, we still believe that power and territory are vital to our sense of self worth and the shift is prelude to moving away from the animal state in us, and allowing much more of the divine human to take charge, which in short defines 2012 as a huge shift of evolutionary consciousness. So in terms of human behavior, what we are focusing on is a shift from a fear-based existence to a love based existence. From a competitive survival environment, to a cooperative thriving environment. We are shifting from benchmarks of one upmanship to a state where we acknowledge that everybody is unique and everybody is fine the way the are.
Sine in any shift the environment and the human mind are linked together, a shift in human consciousness will necessary accompany a shift in our environment. This is unique from the movie, because the movie only focuses on the destructive elements of the environment but doesn’t focus on the shift of consciousness.

A lot of conspiracy theorists are pointing to the most recent earthquake in Japan and are looking at it as a sign of things to come for next year. What is your take on it?
The physical environment as we see it today is a manifested expression of our old consciousness. Simply because no matter how prosperous a country is in terms of its physical structure, they result of that prosperity is largely a duality of disparity. So you will see structures going through huge shifts so that a cooperative structure emerges for everyone, a win-win situation for everyone on earth. Other changes we are looking at are change of climate, the equation of water and land being realigned, where the sea will take back what man has vicariously claimed from it.
Other changes include a major uprising of governments, like in the Middle East as we have witnessed, because people are waking up to disintegrity of disparity.
The layman will not be finding himself embarking on a journey of questioning for the purpose of understanding without blindly following doctrine simply because forefathers lived by it. People are waking up to their own power which they have lost through fear, control and suppression.

How can the layman work towards these changes?
With awareness and understanding knowing that this is part of an evolutionary program which will open up into something much better, one will actually let go of the panic and look at the whole shift as a welcome change in the way of life. Should we do that, the transition will be very comfortable for everybody to handle. It is about handling change with maturity and understanding. Change is inevitable. Our response to it is always in our hand. Finally, as we observe one major destruction in a country such as Japan, you will find the world coming together to support the country in crisis, irrespective of cast greed color, which simply shows that these events trigger us to open our hearts and mind which allows us to move towards oneness, which is all what ascension is about anyway!

Whether we believe that 2012 is an energetic shift to something more positive like Yuvraj says, or whether it is the end of the world as foretold by the Mayan calender, we cannot deny that SOMETHING is going on to which there is no explanation.

Another extremely interesting link is a post I found on the Japanese Nuclear reactors and whether or not it will pose a threat to the country's safety. It is the view of an MIT research scientist and can be found here.
It has been heart wrenching for me to hear about all the destruction taking place as Japan has a very special space in my heart. It was one of my Father's favourite countries and is where his career successes began beginning from his association with Sony. My high school roommate is Japanese and my best friend is originally from Kobe, Japan. Fortunately for me, all my friends and their families are well, and I received my last confirmation from my ex-roommate earlier today, letting me know she is fine. My prayers go out for all those who've lost someone they love to this terrible tragedy.

I'm absolutely stunned with all the madness surrounding Charlie Sheen these days. I've never been a fan of his show, Two and a Half Men but if the crazy stuff he's spewing out of his mouth is anything to go by, I need to go buy back episodes to watch him in action TODAY. While it's really sad to see celebs go out of control, it's entertaining in a sick voyeuristic way to watch them spiral.. I mean really, was Lindsay Lohan ever as entertaining on reel as she is in real life?
I caught this "song" on YouTube with someone Auto Tuning one of Sheen's recent interviews, and it's actually quite brilliant!-


Do you remember the time another celeb, Christian Bale, was better known for his crazy outburst than for his Oscar-winning performance?! I'm sure he's glad he's been able to put that behind him. For those who don't remember his crazy behaviour, here's a lyrical reminder of it. Its hilarious, and actually makes for a great song!

Lady Gaga walks the ramp for Thierry Mugler in Paris

On Wednesday evening, my inner chic came head to head with my inner geek as I had to pick between a Steve Jobs launch of the iPad 2 and the live streaming of the Thierry Mugler Paris show that Lady Gaga had announced she would be walking for. You may have guessed by reading this post (or the post on the iPad 2 only moments after it was launched) that my love for gadgets superseded my love for fashion and I spent the entire evening following bloggers as they played with the latest toy. iWant!
A few thousand miles away however, the fashion world was blown away with an incredible fashion show by Thierry Mugler, which is all set for a big revival after it's appointment of Nicola Formichetti as it's creative Designer for the brand in September. Formichetti is also Gaga's stylist, and the two are supposed to be extremely close. The singer didn't only walk the ramp for the show, but did it while smoking a cigarette and baring her teeth to the crowd, while a yet-to-be released track of hers, "Government Hooker" played in the background. Walk, walk, Fashion Baby...

Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" Video!!

Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" video had it's World Premier less than an hour back! Directed by Nick Knight, Gaga and Laurieann Gibson, this video is probably one of the most awaited music videos EVER. Considering "Express Yourself 2.0" "Born This Way" was the quickest selling single to reach a Million Hits on iTunes, I'm sure you'll be seeing a LOT of this video. Just remember you saw it here first;)

Mark Zuckerberg on SNL!

Here's a snippet of the latest Saturday Night Live, which had a guest appearance of Mark Zuckerberg, who probably needs no introduction post the movie, Social Network. The Facebook founder appeared alongside Jesse Eisenberg, the actor who played Zuckerberg's role in the movie. It's a good think Eisenberg did a better job at acting than the real Zuck, who seems to have terrible comic timing. It's quite sad though, that I rarely even think SNL is funny at all these days.

Every once in a while a song comes out that you just can't stop listening to... The remix version of this song is having JUST that effect on me! This isn't the remix, but I couldn't find the one they play on the radio on YouTube and I figured people might just like this one too. I LOVE!

The making of the Pirelli calender-

Remember the pictures from the Pirelli calender  that I posted last week? Well, a video has been released that shows the making of the calender. Despite the video being 24 minutes long, it is quite intriguing and worth a watch for anybody interested in Karl Lagerfeld, fashion, styling and photography. Also, the shoot is held in the Kaizer's Paris studio that is lined with an insane amount of books! And I thought MY few hundred collection was expansive! Anyhow, watch the video... it will be 24 minutes well spent!

Julia Roberts' $1.5Million moneymaker...

Julia Roberts was paid 1.5 Million USD for the following coffee ad.. that too in Italian. No, the cash didn't quite go into lessons for her to master her Italian, as she doesn't even say a word. She just stands there and flashes that absolutely stunning smile of hers (that remains pearly white despite the coffee apparently). Wow.. I wish someone paid me that kind of money to just stand and smile!

Hottest perfume commercials

Recently two perfume commercials have just been launched by two very interesting women- Anna Dello Russo and Beyonce.
ADR's shows her prancing around in the same dress she wore for the French Vogue Party.. I know she has a closet to die for and all, but every time I see her, I can't help but think, what an unfortunate face! I'm sure the scent will be as unique as her though!

I LOVE the tune playing in the background... Don't know where it is originally from, but I love it from Kanye's song where he goes, "Let's have a toast for the d*ucheb&gs.. lets have a toast for the @ssholes..." You can hear him perform it live here.

Ok the second ad is for the perfume "Heat" by Beyonce.. the ad has actually been banned in Europe where they are not allowed to show it before 7 in the evening. Don't worry, it really isn't quite risque at all, but I'd avoid opening this video at work-



Did I tell you guys already she lives in the same building as me in New York?? Unfortunately, I haven't seen her yet, although a friend of mine saw her at our neighborhood Duane Reede (Pharmacy) one morning though. Doubt she looked anything like this.
