Oh. My. God. I hate Freida Pinto

Ok yes my usually positive self (on my blog anyway) seems to have gone into hiding and I was surprised by my own catty remarks on my Emmy fashion post yesterday. I try hard to be informative and celebratory rather than sounding like the million other blogs out there that chop people down to bits. Right now though, I just can't help myself. As much as I tried not to, I just had to post this. I don't like Frieda Pinto much (who am I kidding, I don't like her at all) and she is on the top of a list of celebrities that I cannot tolerate. Most of the people on that list though, like Miley Cyrus, are talented and good at what they do, and it's just something about them, that certain je ne sais quois quality, that I just don't like. However, I think Freida Pinto has no talent and while I've watched her on numerous magazine covers and TV commercials and gritted my teeth, I found this video online, stupidly clicked on it and it made me want to hurl. It lured me with a "screen test- Freida Pinto" icon on the New York Times website!

What is up with her fake accent?? Really?? British?? I can understand that she might have to don a fake American accent to get movie roles, but where on earth did this come from?!

Extreme jealousy is not attractive, Kiran.

Wow.. Knew someone would come up with the jealousy angle. Just didn't think it would be the first comment!

Lot of much prettier Indian women out there. Have you seen Ayesha Thappar??

And besides, my fake British accent is a lot better than hers, so nothing to be jealous about you see.

I am COMPELLED to respond because I cannot stand Freida Pinto either! I think she was just extremely lucky in getting cast for Slumdog - they just wanted a nobody character, and that's what they got: a plain, nobody actress with no particular acting skills. I definitely give her props for the way she has positioned herself since and walked over everyone she knows to get some international limelight. That shows real determination. She has trained herself 'Aishwarya-style' with speech and elocution lessons, and looks good on the red carpet, but that's where it ends. She has no talent and I am devastated that she has landed a role in a Woody film! Soooo undeserving! There are a thousand other actresses who deserve that privilege of a lifetime. Calling her the new Woody Allen muse makes me sick to the gut. I really wonder how she ever landed that role. She must have pleased him on the casting couch and lied about her age to seem younger, manipulating his weakness for young girls. As for her looks and beauty - she looks like a native village girl that's been polished and groomed (kind of like how Djimon Honsou came up). And there are hundreds of thousands of prettier Indian women out there with more class and natural talent. For the record though - I don't think Ayesha Thappar deserved mention as such an example. She's hot but I think has more of a pornstar look about her than a stunning icon. That is all.

Actually the British colonized India so if she is either from England or India that accent might not be fake..But having said that I truly truly HATE HER too! Yeah i saw her in the Woody Allen film and she sucked!

Well I'm Indian so I'm pretty familiar with the Indian accent and can safely say that is NOT one. Only the Indians who live in the UK or went to a British school in another part of the world have such an accent. Besides, Freida is from Mumbai, probably never even visited the UK before her film came out, and is DEFINITELY putting this on.

I totally agree the woman is highly undeserving, fake and untalented. And it is not lost on us that she thinks bollywood is beneath her. Runs abroad at the first chance she gets, picks up the most annoying fake accent and then says she 'somehow' has not landed roles in bollywood? Ugh. She disgusts me.

Warning: This is going to be very long!!!

Personally, she doesn’t do it for me because (A) I can’t relate to her and (B) I find the personality she showcases in public too easy to read, which in my opinion, makes her utterly drab. She’s friendly and energetic in television interviews, but she somehow still comes across as rehearsed, immature, inexperienced (which she is) and unintriguing. There’s something unauthentic about her, and unfortunately, you can’t fake being an interesting person. To play devil’s advocate, however, she has only been in Hollywood for a couple of years, and she was essentially thrust into a limelight of sorts with no real preparation for it, so in a way, she didn’t have time to gain the experience that might have allowed her to develop a public persona that demonstrates at least some degree of depth. This is problematic because it seems like she’s being marketed as the next big ethnic “it girl” in Hollywood with the potential to become a star, but … she’s totally unconvincing. Despite the cliché nature of the old saying you used, Kiran, Pinto just doesn’t seem to have that je ne sais quoi quality that generally has long-lasting appeal for audiences. I also quite frankly think that Hollywood doesn’t know what exactly to even do with her (as in, what kinds of role-categories to place her in).

It’s not her fault for being shoved into the spotlight without warning, and she’s probably doing the best she can under the circumstances, but I think what also bothers me about her is that she truly did get lucky but she likes to make it seem like she worked really, really hard to get where she is. Relatively speaking, for her, this might be true. I think she has spoken out about how she couldn’t get a break in Bollywood because she was too dark-skinned. I have no idea how Bollywood works, and if that’s the case, it’s awful. But if she thinks that a couple of years of getting rejected in Bollywood was bad, in actuality, there are actors who get their dreams crushed every day in Hollywood because they are one inch too short, or not pretty enough, or have shoulders that are too wide, or are 5 pounds too heavy. It’s ridiculously hard, especially for women. And perfectly talented actors who have paid up the a$$ to take classes and train, and have sacrificed so much to get a foot in the door get a big, fat rejection sign slapped in their faces time and time again. Freida was “discovered” for her tiny little role in SDM and from that point on, got signed with a very mighty agency and management team and got a publicity team that seems like it won’t rest until her face is plastered all over every magazine cover (I kind of gagged the other day when I saw her on a mag cover while grocery shopping). She might have to prove herself at auditions to ultimately get cast in some of these roles she’s been in post-SDM, but if she didn’t have the kind of people she has on her side at this early point in her career, she wouldn’t even be getting the chance to audition for these roles that give her as much visibility as they do. If she had tried to make it in Hollywood without SDM, she would have almost certainly been ignored. So for some, it’s unnerving and therefore hard to justify her success. If she seemed like she was actually genuinely talented, I would be less critical—appreciative even. But despite only having had small roles, she still doesn’t contribute much because of her average acting skills. She is persistent, though, I’ll give her that.

She reminds me of one of those kids in high school who makes such an obvious effort to fit in. I guess she doesn’t really have a choice, but she shouldn’t have been so quick to brush off and bad-mouth Bollywood after she gained exposure in Hollywood. I don’t think Bollywood industry insiders or too many of her fellow Indians appreciated that. If she had been more modest, she might’ve at least had a back-up option if her career in Hollywood happens to go south.
