The drama about the iPhone 4G

Gotta love Dilbert!
For those not in the know, the drama started when tech blog Gizmodo found the newest (not yet released) Apple iPhone in a bar. In a few hours, the internet was RED HOT as Apple fans everywhere, logged on to have a sneak peak of the device. To put it mildly, havoc ensued, and it ended with Gizmodo giving the phone back, and Jason Chen's (Gizmodo's Ed) house being raided by the Police, and his computers and servers, seized. A lot of people (including a few tech-obsessed friends of mine) thought this was a brilliant marketing ploy by Apple to create some hype around the iPhone. I just figured, that could only be true under two huge assumptions- One, the leaked iPhone would help the sales of current/future iPhone  and two, Apple was God-like and beyond human error. Assumption number 1 wouldn't hold true as I believe current iPhone sales would definitely take a beating, as a newer, and better device would be available to consumers in a few, short months. And as for assumption number 2... well... despite popular belief (see below) I'm still betting on that human error part.
The discussion is now on whether Gizmodo is legally protected for it's actions as it purchased (for $5000) the lost/stolen iPhone and did not make any attempt at giving it back. Read this interesting article on the Time blog if you want to know more about the case.

I'm very skeptical about the 'deliberate leak' stance many people seem to be taking. While Apple has known to have controlled leaks about its products via certain media, letting loose the entire product to be taken apart (literally) by one of the most read technology blogs is taking it a bit too far. The company known to throw in surprises at their announcements wouldn't give away their entire offering like that.

To me it seems like a case of a genuine (and costly) human error. Either way, June isn't too far away. Let's see what Apple has in store for us.

Exactly! I can see why some would consider it to be a fantastic marketing gimmick, but really.. would anyone consider buying a 3GS now if they knew a 4G with front facing camera and better features was coming out soon??
Also the TRUE apple fans (yours truly included) sit and wait around for 10 AM Cupertino time when Steve Jobs takes the stage and razzles and dazzles his latest product launches. The buzz makes news! I've been known to cancel social engagements (or very recently carted along my laptop to a fashion show) on such days, so I can get on gizmodo or engadget, and hit "refresh" till Kindgom (and product) come! I probably won't be tuning in for the 4th gen iPhone.

You're absolutely right about no-one wanting to buy the 3GS now, especially knowing the dramatic upgrade of a product the 4G/HD is going to be.

Now now, we both know you'll still be keeping an eye out for the news in the hope that El Jobso has that 'one more thing' up his sleeve.
